General Reality Company Introduces World's First Wireless DataGloveTMNew Wireless 5th Glove DataGloveTM eliminates constricting tether in motion capture and virtual reality applications. |
August 4, 1997 Los Angeles, CA: General Reality Company today introduced its new Wireless 5th Glove, which outputs finger bend and wrist orientation to PC serial ports over a high-speed wireless link.
The Wireless 5th Glove is based on the 5th Glove DataGlove, which is the most popular device in the world for capturing finger and wrist motion into virtual reality and motion capture applications. Wireless capability supports the need for increased artistic freedom expressed by existing 5th Glove users in motion capture applications such as Softimage and Alias|Wavefront, virtual reality simulations using Superscape and WorldToolKit, and performance animation systems by SimGraphics, Kaydara, Protozoa, DreamTeam, and QuantumWorks. The wireless feature adds a small transmitter which is easily mounted on the user’s arm or belt or in the user’s pocket. The glove itself samples finger bend and wrist pitch/roll data at up to 200 samples/second, and outputs to a serial port at 8-bit accuracy.
According to Arthur Zwern, president of General Reality Company, "We’re proud to introduce the world’s first wireless dataglove for motion capture applications. The new Wireless 5th Glove is the only viable solution for animators and performance artists who need hand information in situations where cables interfere with the intended motion path."
The new Wireless 5th Glove will be demonstrated for the first time at SIGGRAPH 97, in booth 3715. It is scheduled to begin shipping in September 1997, at a list price of $995, with significant volume discounts available.
